Jesús M. Arrieta holds a PhD from the University of Groningen and has done research on the diversity and function of marine microbes at several institutions, including the University of Vienna, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Marine Research, the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA) and the Red Sea Research Centre of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).
His research interests revolve around microbial ecology, the role of microbes in the functioning of the biosphere and climate regulation. He has worked on topics such as carbon storage in the deep ocean, microbial transport through the oceans and the utilisation of marine genetic resources. As part of this talk, he led the first global survey on the utilisation of marine genetic resources and isolated a collection of microbes during the Malaspina Expedition that were used to develop cosmetic products.
